Fall leaves are part of what makes October beautiful in Central Ohio. When those leaves collect in your gutters, though, it is time to pay attention to where rainwater goes.
Cleaning is a sensible first step when debris blocks the flow. But if the same problem returns after the gutters and downspouts are clear, another issue may need attention. Here are five signs your home may need more than a seasonal cleaning.
1. Water Still Overflows After Cleaning
If water spills over the edge during ordinary rain, note where it happens. Does one corner overflow, or does water spill along an entire section?
A blockage may still be present in a downspout or outlet. If the full route is clear, a contractor can assess gutter slope, capacity, and downspout placement. Removing leaves will not correct a layout that struggles to handle runoff from the roof.
What to ask: Is this a remaining blockage, an alignment problem, or a capacity issue?
2. Joints and Corners Keep Leaking
Watch for recurring drips at seams, corners, and end caps. A leak at a connection is different from water spilling over the top of a clogged gutter.
An isolated problem may be repairable. Multiple leaking connections or visibly deteriorated sections deserve a closer assessment before another round of patching. Ask which areas can be repaired and why any replacement is recommended.
What to ask: Can the leaking connection be repaired, and what is the condition of the surrounding gutter?
3. Gutters Sag or Pull Away From the House
From the ground, look for a noticeable dip or a section separating from the roof edge. A gutter needs secure support and an appropriate slope toward its outlet.
Clearing debris does not automatically fix loose supports, damaged gutter sections, or deteriorated attachment surfaces. The inspection should include the fascia board behind the gutter, rather than assuming the gutter itself is the only problem.
What to ask: Is the issue with the gutter, its supports, or the material those supports attach to?
4. Water Runs Behind the Gutter
Rainwater should enter the gutter. If you see it running between the gutter and the house, or notice recurring staining and peeling paint below that area, document the location.
Those clues call for an inspection of how the roof edge and gutter work together. Gutter position and roof-edge flashing may need attention. Staining alone does not establish the cause, so avoid choosing a repair based only on appearance.
What to ask: Where is the water escaping, and what needs to change to direct it into the gutter?
5. Water Collects Beside the Foundation
A gutter can collect roof runoff successfully while the downspout sends it to an unsuitable location. Look for recurring puddles, washed-out mulch, or erosion near the outlet.
The assessment should follow water all the way from the roof to its discharge point. Depending on the property, the discussion may include downspout extensions, underground drain lines, or surface grading. Persistent basement moisture may have additional causes and should not be treated as a guaranteed gutter-only fix.
What to ask: Where should the runoff go, and will the proposed route carry it away without creating another problem?
Would Gutter Guards Help?
Gutter guards can reduce debris entering the system, but they do not repair leaks, straighten sagging gutters, or correct a poor discharge location. They also still need inspection and maintenance.
Ask which guard design suits the debris around your home, how it will be serviced, and whether existing gutter problems need to be addressed before installation.
Your October Gutter Checklist
- Observe the roof edge and downspout outlets from a safe ground-level location.
- Photograph recurring overflow, leaks, staining, and pooling.
- Arrange safe removal of debris from gutters and downspouts.
- Check performance again during ordinary rain, without going outside in dangerous weather.
- Plan another check as more leaves fall.
Leave elevated inspections and repairs to a qualified professional. You do not need to climb onto the roof to collect useful information for an estimate.
